Hello & Welcome to the Forum. How old is your set? This IS important. The Santa Fe set has been around for a very long time. Set number/locomotive number? Researched the Lionel Trains Workshop sub forum for an answer? Yes, that 9 volt battery, should be replaced with correct voltage. Photo's are always welcome.

Hello & Welcome to the Forum! Here is MY answer to your power needs question. Assemble yout track and the passing loop, connect your power pack & turn it on, all the way up. IF you own a multi meter, now is the time to break that puppy out. If you don't own one, borrow or buy an inexpensive one. Set the meter for the correct ac/dc - voltage. Using the meter, check the voltage supplied at the track terminal. Using that voltage as your base, check around the track & passung loop to see if/how much line loss you have. If significant at furthest point from track terminal, you'll need either additional power feeds for more power around the layout. If you have dead spots, check the track connections. Use either terminal tracks or solder feeder lines to your track. Hope this helps. Happy Rails! dave

Hello & Welcome to the Forum.
My way of telling is to add cars to the consist until the locomitive start spinning it wheels, then removing a car or two. I believe modern cars are heavier that the early tin plate.
Hoprle this helps. Happy Rails dave

Hello & Welcome to the Forum. This is a problem that many have faced with their trains. IF you want to run the larger locomotives, you are going to have to go with larger radius curved track. You can run on tighter curves, but if it doesn't jam up on the curve, you will possibly be wearing out (grinding) either your wheels or track. It's Up to You, as an operator. Happy Rails. dave
Also working on uploader problem.

Hello & Welcome to the Forum.
Your choice of track is an individual thing.. Fast track can be noisy if laid straight on a base without some form of sound deadening material laid first. The Gargraves is good track and more realistic looking. Again its up to you. Happy Rails... Dave.

Hello. Your power supply should be enough. You will probably want to add an extra feeder line or two so you have steady power around the loop.

Hello & a belated Welcome to the Forum. My fix for your dilemna is to use a jar or tube of petrolium jelly and cover the areas you don't want painted. When paint dries wipe off the vaseline. You might want to carefully wipe the track with alcohol to disolve any remnant vaseline. I've used this trick after soaking track in agricultural vinegar. Be sure to make sure your insulating paper survives. l hope this helps.... Happy Rails .. dave

Hello & Welcome to the Forum. The.most common cause l have encountered with this problem, is the insulating board needing replacement,. When it goes bad, it allows the sound board to short out on the frame/car & make noise or not work at all. Hope this helps. Happy Rails! dave
