General Lionel Model Train Discussion / Reintroductions
« on: May 11, 2016, 10:10:20 am »
Hi all!
It has been quite a while since I have been on the Lionel forum, so I thought I would reintroduce myself. I have been working with O scale trains for about 13 years, and about four years ago I built my first tabletop layout. I went through many different setups, looks, and themes before getting it just where I wanted it (a result of poor planning). When I finally got the track plan down, I made an attempt to rewire a portion of the layout and I basically ruined one of the main scenery projects that I had worked on for months. The damage was so bad that the area could not be salvaged. So, I began tearing apart the whole layout and rebuilding from scratch. I used a similar track plan of two loops and a switch yard, and I am very happy with the way it is looking so far. In reflection, I wish that I had built my tables around the walls of the room, because a 12 by 8 surface in the center of my room limits the ability to spread out. When I get the majority of my main layout to a certain point, I am planning to begin building a set of small modules that I can work on individually.

My collection currently consists of about 20 engines, just over 100 pieces of rolling stock, and just a few buildings that will eventually make their way on to the layout. I have an even mixture of steam and diesel, but my hope is to collect a lot of steam engines.

I will post pictures as soon as I can get the train room cleaned up. I welcome your input, and would love to hear about your layouts and collections.

Thanks,
Troy Reid

Will anyone be at the Lionel special event in Concord, NC this weekend? Hope to see someone there!

I will clean up the layout and post some pictures. Your post got me thinking... I could cut into my hill and make room for some 0-72 curves, which means bigger, better trains!!! Thanks Dave!

I lifted up a piece of track to improve the wiring's reliability, and the whole thing came crumbling down.

I am sorry you feel that way. Lionel's manufacturer in china has been behind on production for a long time. Also, the terminal was in high demand, so you can not expect them to be exactly on time. For such a high quality company, Lionel can make up for being behind in its high quality.

And that was just a makerbot! Imagine what we could do with a Siemens Lazermetal 3D Printer that SpaceX uses to build rocket parts.

O Scale / Re: Copatibility between Lionel and MTH

You probably have the Legacy and the DCS systems linked. As long as they are both O Scale and you have the control systems linked, you can use them both.

Beginners Q & A / Re: please school me on switchs

If you want to put the Lionel Fastrack Switches on your layout, all you need to do is purchase the remote switch. However, in order to use a pattern, you will need the Legacy or Cab 1 attached to an Accessory Interface Unit.

Woah! I had no idea that there were so many blogs out there. I purchased a domain name, and will probably use it for tips, reviews, tutorials, and other cool train stuff.  Thanks so much!

I don't think that would work.
