Diesel no 202 eunit only has stop and reverse
« on: February 11, 2015, 02:14:36 pm »
what is wrong with this E-unit. 2 positions: normal and stop. In the normal position the operation lacks forward.  Reverse-stop-reverse-stop-reverse.replaced wiring. Is this thing missing a wire from the e-unit for forward motion. There are two terminals, but only one wire. If another wire is needed, Where should the other wire connect on the motor?  Got a photo ?

Welcome to the forum!
You have a locomotive with a dual wound field windings; one winding is an orange color wire, and the other is a green color wire. Make sure you can see both ends of both wires. One end of both wires will be twisted together, and the other ends of both wires will be free. You need to have this to get your locomotive to run and reverse properly.
If you do not see this, then your motor field winding may need to be rewound, or you can convert the locomotive to use a 3 position e-unit with just the wiring you have.
Here is the schematic page for the 200 series locomotives; the schematic for your loco is in the upper right corner.

Make sure you have the solder lug and nylon washer for the second field wire to electrically isolate the wiring from the motor frame.
See here for an exploded view of the locomotive and motor.

If you need further assistance, I can e-mail you a photo with the wiring drawn in to help in wiring up the e-unit and motor.

Larry,
I do  need further assistance.
Yes, please e-mail a photo with the wiring drawn in to help in wiring up the e-unit and motor. - See more at: http://www.lioneltrainforum.com/o-scale/diesel-no-202-eunit-only-has-stop-and-reverse/msg1021/?topicseen#new

I was unable to access http://pictures.olsenstoy.com/cd/ho%5Cd200a.pdf and http://pictures.olsenstoy.com/cd/ho%5Cd200a.pdf.  Is the "%5C"  in the URL intentional?
Thanks,
mtfrizzell (Mike)

yes, I can see both the orange and green wires of the motor field winding. One end is twisted together and soldered to the terminal of one of the brushes.  The other end of the green wire goes to the middle connector just above the winding. The other end of the orange wire is soldered to the tab that goes from the motor to one of the terminals on the side of the e-unit.  The other terminal on the side of the e-unit is unused.  There is a wire from the roller wheel connection on the truck to the other brush of the motor and from there to the terminal on top of the e-unit. There is another wire from there to the engine's light, for which I have no bulb so that is open.

Mike,
Thanks for the picture, it really helps. You need one more wire to get the loco to reverse. Solder one end of a wire to the end of the green wire connected to the center terminal. The other end of the wire goes to the second terminal of the e-unit. See the red line I drew in your picture.

The hyperlinks I inserted do open up properly, and the service manual pages open in .pdf format. Make sure your browser is able to display .pdf files.

Larry,
Adding the missing wire from the motor to the e-unit did the trick.  My 202 engine works perfectly now - forward and reverse!
Thanks for the expertise.

That is good news, Mike!
I know it feels good to get your locomotive running properly!
Enjoy your trains!
