Box car screws
« on: May 26, 2020, 09:44:14 am »
Does anybody know what screw size and thread the 9400 and 9700 series box cars use for fastening the shell to the frame? The 6464 series uses a #4 screw with a sheet metal thread, while the 9400 and 9700 series use a machine screw thread. I tried gently testing with a 4-40 and a 4-36 tap, but neither one matched the thread. I am thinking that maybe it is metric?

According to the Lionel service manual 1-9, page 6-1, the body screw for 9700 series boxcars is part #9700-25 which is a #4-40x1/4 flat head Phillips screw.

Lionel service manual 12, page 17-2 calls out Lionel part #8405-5 screw which is a #2x5/16 Phillips head screw.

TrainLarry,

Thanks for the references. Mine is definitely not 4-40. I didn't know about the #2 screws which is why I suggested it might be metric. I will have to take the screw to my local hardware store to check it out. I always like to stick to the original, no matter what I am working on. Maybe in this case I shouldn't worry about it and just use the sheet metal thread 6464 screw, which I have plenty of (?)

just a follow up for anybody reading this thread. I had the opportunity to check the thread in question and it is, in fact, 4-40.

Glad you identified the screw.

For the future, a set of Imperial and Metric screw pitch gauges will come in handy to help identify screws.
