HI All,
I picked up a 4-4-2 Atlantic #8635 at a yard sale and looked hardly used.
I put is on the track and to my surprise it RAN but in short sputters then a fairly long run.
I took it apart and found the switch for the forward/revers broken apart. I soldered the 2 wires together
and tried it again, same result.
I am wondering if the motor could be bad? I cannot find a I.P.B. (parts breakdown) to look up part numbers.
Any body eles have this same issue with running like described? if so any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to the forum!
The first thing to do is to clean all the wheels, the pickup rollers and track with Naphtha to insure there is no dirt causing intermittent running problems.
If after all this is done, and you still have the issue, the motor may need replacement. Call Lionel service at 586-949-4100 to order a replacement.

Thanks Larry, I tried the Lionel web page for looking up parts but it is in my opinion not user friendly.
Thanks for the phone #. I did clean the wheels and pickups when I had it apart.

Hi, was able to get the 4-4-2 running great. It was the roller pickups that were not rolling but sliding on the power rail.
I tested the loco on the test bench and when voltage applied it ran with no hesitation. I ran my fingers over the roller
pickups and saw they were stuck. I sprayed contact cleaner on both and away it went. Now all I need to replace is the
microswitch that is broken.
