Lionel Pre-war 225E
« on: December 21, 2020, 11:04:57 am »
I just re-discovered a long lost train set that belonged to my grandfather.  I don't have much knowledge or experience with model trains but I did a little research and the best I can tell it's a pre-war 225E engine w/tender.  There was only one piece of track in the container and no transformer.  I would like to test it out and eventually put it around my Christmas tree if I can get it to work.  Can anyone recommend a transformer, track type, and other accessories I would need to give this thing a try?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

You have a nice engine there. First thing to do is to clean and lubricate it. Use Naphtha to clean all the wheels, and rollers of any dirt and gunk. Use the Labelle kit to oil the wheel bearings and grease the gears.

You will need '0' gauge tubular track to run it on. Tinman has refurbished '0' gauge tubular track,

or you can buy new production from Menard's.

A good new starter transformer is the Lionel CW-80, or if you plan on expanding your empire, some golden oldies like the postwar KW or ZW will power up a nice sized layout.

Accessories - look for them at auction sites - there are dozens of them.

Thanks Larry.  I appreciate the info.

Would you recommend O gauge tubular or O27 track for the 225E to run on or does it matter?

Thanks again.

'0' gauge track is more sturdier than '027' track.
