Welcome aboard, Martin.

Looking at various pictures of your Lionel G gauge Thomas set, it APPEARS to me that the controller and transformer are one solid piece. It also appears that Lionel uses two slightly-different power pack/transformers for this set.

Sometimes Lionel sells individual parts, and you can contact them to find out.
