i am planning to create a small layout around the fireplace - to display my train during the christmas holidays
my five car train is 65 years old this winter -
two questions please
1) what is the diameter of a circle of 027 track including the metal ties
&
2) what is the best roadbed to use - i will be putting the track on a wooden surface
thanks so much

I checked a circle of O27 track. Diameter, outside of tie to outside of tie across the circle measures 27 inches.
Roadbed.
Traditional:
painted board
green felt stretched over board
carpet laid on board
cork strips under track
Modern:
extruded foam
indoor/outdoor grass carpet
commercial roadbed
Whatever you choose to use, is the best.
It's like Chevy or Ford, which is better?
Dave

rdeal,
keep in mind that your rolling stock may overhang the track on the curves.
You'll want to make sure that anything next to the rails is far enough away, so as not to be hit by the passing train.
We always enjoy seeing photo's of Post War Rolling Stock & Locomotives!

thanks for this "new" information
i will check this out before i proceed further - i have a maximum distance of 28.5 inches
let me restate this - imagine a compass with these measurements
north and south compass points - no problems - unlimited space
but
east and west compass points - train & track must operate with a maximum distance of 28.5 inches
later in the day - i will make photos of the area and repost
thanks - rdeal
Instead of the carpet, I recommend a woodland scenics vinyl grass mat depending on layout size.
