Loco Clearance Issue
« on: November 30, 2013, 01:15:35 pm »
Hi:

I have an old Lionel 221 loco from 1947.  I recently unpacked it and tried it out on my test track.  It runs perfectly well except for the fact that it hangs up when trying to clear the #6019 uncoupling track section.  The engine and the test track (including the #6019) are all O27 of the same vintage.  All my other engines manage this section perfectly well.  It appears to be a clearance issue.  The engine jumps when it hits the uncoupling section.  Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Thanks,
Davehagar01

Dave,
Welcome to the Forum!
I have a 1946 ~ Lionel 221 & 221W tender, so I  am familiar with some of it's quirks.

It sounds as if the roller pickup on the locomotive may be bent down too far and catching on the activator of the
uncoupling track as it passes over, causing the loco to jump/derail.
or
The actuator on the uncoupling track may be bent up enough to catch the roller pickup on the loco as it passes over.

If you have another uncoupling track, try replacing the  piece that you're having issues with and see it the loco still jumps/derails there.

If that doesn't do the trick, then check the pickup roller.

Dave:

I forgot to mention in my original post that the engine has shoes instead of rollers.  Actually the engine I have is a 1946 model with cast aluminum drivers.  It appears to have very little clrearance between the underframe and the center rail in comparison to my other engines, all of which have rollers.  I think the shoes are hanging up somewher on the uncoupling track.  I going to continue to poke around.  I would appreciate any further thoughts you may have.

Thanks!

Dave

Dave,
I just checked mine & it has the slider shoes also.
You can check to make sure the springs are operating correctly, the shoes should slide up and down easily.
Check to make sure that the shoe hasn't been bent out of shape on the leading edge and make sure that the lip of the following(2nd) slider shoe points up so it will slide over the uncoupler actuator.

Dave:

The shoes and their springs are in perfect shape.  However, I followed up on your earlier hint about the actuator possibly being bent up enough to catch.  Actually it (mostly the red plastic area around the actuator button) appeared to be bulging, so I simply filed it down sufficiently so the shoes were no longer snagging on it.  So now the problem is now resolved.  The old 221 is running perfectly.  And I didn't have to do anything with the engine.  Thanks for your help!

While we are on the subject of the 221, is yours gray like mine, and do you know if anyone makes a good model paint to match it?

Dave,
The 1946 ~ 221's were painted Grey, the 1947 ~ 221's were painted Black.

As to repainting your locomotive and tender I'm sure that the paint can be matched if it is not available commercially.

Personally, I don't believe in repainting  unless the original paint is totally wasted.  When you repaint, you destroy the history, love & play the train has received over the years, taking away the originality & individual personality  the locomotive has developed over its lifetime.

So, unless it's a total piece of junk paintwise, I'd just clean it up really well and apply a coat of wax to it.
