Beginners Q & A / CW 80 Transformer Seems to have No Power

I just purchased a Polar Express Train for Christmas and cannot figure out how to make it run.  The transformer seems to get no power from any of several outlets.  It originally ran for maybe 10 seconds, shut down and hasn't powered up since.  Does anyone have any tips for me please?
