You should pick up the Standard Catalog of Lionel Trains books. They are a great reference for dates and variations etc.

I prefer to use a transformer but you can add a terminal track as well.

You can set the transformer lower than 18 it will limit the top speed of the locomotive and help keep the train on the track when little users are using it.
