So i did a bit of diagnosing. I took off the shell and ran it just a few inches. I noticed that the arm that goes up and down to puff the smoke does in fact move. Which leads me to believe that if the smoke unit is still smoking I simply need a new smoke unit. Does this sound like it make sense. Im new to this hobby so I consider this a learning experience haha. Let me know. Thanks everyone :) God bless

Hi everyone. For some reason my lionel 681 is not puffing smoke. The smoke unit itself is working but its not puffing. If anyone has any ideas or tips that would be great. Thank you :)

Hi everyone just had a question about my whistle. I have a Lionel 681 steam turbine with the tender that came with it. it seems that the whistle only really sounds good and works right when the train is neutral with the voltage all the way up. When im running the engine around the track it doesn't seem to have enough juice. is this normal or is there a problem. I have a kw transformer.

Hi everyone just found this website and its great. Have a few questions about this hobby. So about 2 years ago after my grandpa passed i was at his house and found his Lionel train set. it includes a 681 locomotive with the whistling tender. A box car with a man that pops out. a gondola car. and a caboose. And alot of o guage track. and a kw transformer. So my grandma gave it to me as a gift and I've gotten it out for Christmas for the past 2 years. I want to keep the set and engine in really good condition so i can pass it along one day. Anyways it doesn't look like there has been any major work   or restoration done. other then oil and lub. I would like to know if i should do anything to keep it in good running order. I also am wondering about what kind of oil and grease/lub i should use. I have a 927 kit but the oil and grease is almost gone. Thanks everyone:) God bless
