Lionel 5712 TOC Reefer
« on: December 05, 2014, 11:27:47 am »
Hello all, I have been looking at this Lionel TOC Reefer. My question is, what do they mean by TOC?  And why is it so expensive?  Thanks Steve .

mrnavy2,

I can't really answer your question but it was uncataloged and sort of scarce.
Probably was available through a club like the Lionel Rail Road Club [LRRC].

An extensive internet search has come up pretty empty. Apparently this is the only Lionel reefer called a TOC reefer. As best as can be determined, the TOC may stand for Terminal Operations and Container.

As has been noted, the asking prices of this car may be due to it being an uncatalogued car from 1982 making it fairly scarce, and therefore more collectible.

TOC could also be a railroad name possibly Toledo and Ohio Central which became part of the NYC.

After doing some research it stands for Turn Of Century.  Lionel made a few of TOC but it did not go over well.   Why the Lionel Lines is more expensive is unknow. Maybe just a low amount were made. Steve.

Thanks for the update.
It sure was not easy tracking down the meaning of the letters.

Other than the General sets, Lionel should put together a complete Turn Of the Century train, from locomotive to caboose, for those who would like to model that era.

Larry, the Lionel 5701 TOC DAIRYMANS REEFER was also a TOC. I read someplace that they, Lionel wanted to start a Series of TOC but it never happen. I am not sure why. But I also plan to purchased the 5701 to add to my collection. I also have the 5712 Lionel Lines for sale. I have 3 of them. All NEW. If u PM me I can give u a price if you are interested. Steve.
