Beginner who needs help
« on: July 28, 2017, 10:18:00 pm »
Hello my name is Adrian and I am new to the forum. I just started model railways a couple of months ago and it was definitely one of the best decisions I have made in a long time. Now since I have bought more track and bought more box cars, I'm ready to expand and get another train but there is only one problem. How do you run two trains on the same track at the same time? I have a 120 volt transformer as of right now since it's the one I received from the Polar Express set and I don't think that would run two trains at the same time. I run o gauge and Lionel fast track. Since I'm only a teen, I don't know many people who have model trains and knows about model trains, so I came on here to get some help from the experts. I'm willing to do anything as long as it's not ridiculously priced and I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks!

Adrian,
Welcome to the world of Lionel model trains!

To operate more than one train on the same track, you need to use a Command system, such as the Lionel Legacy system: http://www.lionel.com/products/990-legacy-command-set-6-14295

Your second engine would need to be Command Controlled. The Legacy system will allow you to operate one non-command locomotive (what you have, also known as a "Conventional" locomotive), and one Command Controlled loco (or multiple Command Controlled locomotives).

Thanks for the info Larry but I have one more question. How am I supposed to know which engines are command controlled?

Most new engines are Command Controlled. Reading the description of the engine will tell you. Look for the terms "Legacy" or "LionChief" to denote Command equipped locomotives.

After looking on the internet, I was having issues how I am supposed to connect a conventional train to the Lionel Legacy System and if I needed a tmcc or not

Train shows are great for finding information and used stuff at great prices. They are so much fun. Try to find one near you. Either way look for a refurbished ZW transformer they can be had for between 125 and 150. If you are interested command control on a budget you can look at the Lionchief and Lionchief plus locos.
