Replacement horn for 2343 diesel
« on: December 21, 2020, 06:38:06 pm »
Any suggestions for a replacement horn for a 2343 diesel? I found several on eBay, including an "ACME metal buzzer, burglary alarm, bicycle, door bell horn," a "Delta style 1.5v bicycle tank horn," and some others that all look like my original. Anybody know if these are okay? Also, I see that Lionel introduced an Electronic Horn Kit (6-8190) somewhere along the line. Any info on that? Would it work with an old school KW transformer and would it fit into the dummy 2343?  Thanks, Bob

Thanks, Larry. What a difference in price between eBay and Just Trains!  That ACME buzzer I mentioned was only $7.22. That is why I posted here, to see if anyone had any experience with it.

What about the Electronic Horn Kit (6-8190)? If it sounds the same as to original then, as they say in Brooklyn,  fuhgeddaboudit. But if it sounds more like a real horn I would consider it. Not worried about keeping my 2343 stock.

I forgot to mention that, as a point of reference, I have an 8205 UP Dash-8 engine with an electronic horn. That horn sounds just like the 2343 horn. So, maybe the Electronic Horn Kit (6-8190) was for repair of the horn board and/or speaker that was in the Dash-8 and other engines of that era?

I don't think that any horn or whistle boards of that era are going to sound real. Lionel did its best with the technology available back then.

With today's technology of being able to record real train sounds and burn them on chips, the era of authentic train sounds emanating from our trains has arrived.
