Troubleshooting - Engine
« on: November 25, 2019, 05:07:42 pm »
BRAND NEW to model trains.  Purchased a ready-to-play set for easy entry.  When the track is connected - the light at the power is solid.  If I add any cars, the light stays solid.  The moment the engine connects to the middle track, the power light flashes, signifying a short.  I have confirmed that the wires under the engine are connected properly.  I have even tilted the engine on the outside track and the light remains solid.  ONLY when the center track connects with the engine does the power light on the track begin to flash.  THOUGHTS?  TIA

Welcome to the forum, and to the wonderful world of model trains!

It sounds like the locomotive may be bad. A little more information is needed. What brand set is it, and what is the catalog number of the set? Is the loco a steam engine or a diesel? Does the light flash with just the locomotive on the track alone? Is the power off when you put the engine on the track?

With these answers we can help you better.

What is the catalog number of the set? Unsure
Is the loco a steam engine or a diesel? Assuming Steam
Does the light flash with just the locomotive on the track alone? Yes
Is the power off when you put the engine on the track? Yes - I have literally gone through each step - step by step as the manual states

If the set was just purchased, return it to the dealer and have them check the locomotive there. If it is defective, they may be able to swap out a new one for you. If not, a return to Lionel for repair under warranty may be needed.
