Restoring a post war 685 for Dad - Christmas gift
« on: October 12, 2013, 03:33:49 pm »
Hello - this is my first post. My boys and I are going to try and get my father's 1953 Hudson 685 rolling as a Christmas gift to him. I plan to read as much as I can on the topic, but thought I might get a head-start by checking in here. Thanks in advance for any tips and advice. I've attached some photos of the loco in question. I guess my first question is, based on what you see in the photos - is restoration possible? There are some missing pieces and bent drive shafts, but the drive wheels do turn without binding, and the gears seem to be in good shape. What on-line stores would you recommend for parts? What tips and tricks would you offer for cleaning the unit - I assume that's step 1.

I'm sure I'll be asking much more, but this should get me going. Your help will make an old Vietnam Vet a happy Grand-Pappy at Christmas - thanks.

'Frank
