Removing the trailing 4-wheel unit from the motor of a 2026
« on: December 21, 2023, 06:31:54 pm »
Hello Lionel people. New person here. I still have the Lionel train that I got for Christmas around 1953-54. It’s in generally good condition and my wife likes me to take it out every year and set it up around the Christmas tree. The engine is the common 2026 which if I understand correctly is called the prairie model, even though it’s a 2-6-4, not a 2-6-2. The original motor died recently and I decided I was not going to learn all about motor rebuilding (my main hobby is vintage radios and that takes up most of my spare time).  So, I took a gamble and bought a replacement motor from an ebay seller who has a good reputation. The gamble seems to have paid off because it runs like a champ. But there’s a big “however.” I am unable to detach the trailing four- wheel unit that is attached to my old motor and then attach it to the replacement motor. The screw, if that’s what it actually is, and which holds it to the underside of the motor, turns freely. Will I have to disassemble the old motor to the point where I can spread the sides of the motor and remove the cross-bar where the trailing unit is connected? And of course then do the same in reverse with the replacement motor? Looking forward to advice from the community and grateful for it.
Tom
