If you can't fix it, I hope you kept your receipt.

I'm sorry this happened to you, but you should be able to get either a replacement or a refund.

Sorry, Jjm, but I can't think of anything other than what you already suggested.

But one way or the other, can you let us know how it works out?

Jjm, are you able to run it on a track with a transformer to see if that works?

Terry, most trains that old have had replacement parts installed When you see a recent photo of that engine, it probably shows replacement parts. I have seen videos of very old trains (One guy had a 100-year-old Lionel locomotive that ran), but those trains have some replacement parts.

No problem, Terry.

I found two old threads on other forums that state that the "E" is stamped on the door, but that Lionel ran out of the panel that had the door, so they substituted a similar part. Check https://ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/topic/lionel-402-info-needed?reply=29023674663479771#29023674663479771 for one of the threads.

The first ones had a side panel with the letter "E" stamped into it. For reasons I can't fathom, that showed the direction lever. When they ran out of them, Lionel substituted a similar panel with the letter "E" rubber-stamped onto it. Later, they quit stamping the "E."

Terry, although you stored them carefully, the lubricants have probably hardened. Fortunately, using the correct solvent will probably correct the problem.

They look like they are in good condition, and they are unusually old, so they should be worth something. However, the market is glutted with old model trains, so I doubt that you will collect a fortune.

The little bit of online information I can find indicates that the loco was first manufactured around 1926, but Lionel continued to make them for some time. Production ended around 1935. Over time, Lionel ran out of the correct side panel and substituted a different side panel.

Beginners Q & A / Re: Revisiting my youth

Currently, I believe that only Lionel manufactures O gauge locomotives. You might find what you want on their website.

39
Terry, are there any brand identifications on the cars? I can't tell from your pictures if they are tinplate. Is there a motor inside the locomotive? Can you measure the width between the wheels? (That might tell us the gauge).

General Lionel Model Train Discussion / Product Review: NYC diesel
« on: August 15, 2021, 08:33:36 pm »
Lionel's play gauge New York Central diesel arrived today, and it runs great!  I prefer steamers to diesels, so I was pleased at how good it looks. The sound effects are excellent and actually seem superior to the sound effects on my steamers.

We are currently building the Minecraft Experimental Railroad, complete with monsters, castles, catapults, and repair facilities (necessary in a war zone).

Despite researching the web, I cannot find out what "ZW" means.

General Lionel Model Train Discussion / Girls Like Trains!
« on: July 13, 2021, 06:26:13 pm »
We had a wonderful day with five girls from Love in Action Orphanage at our house. Most of them had never seen model trains before, and they had a great time running three of our Lionel Large Gauge trains.

And Yes, girls do like model trains.

General Lionel Model Train Discussion / Re: Lionel HO
« on: June 29, 2021, 07:48:38 am »
FINALLY!

I have been asking for over a year: Does anybody own a Lionel HO trains set? And I have never gotten an answer.
Yesterday I found customer reviews for Lionel's HO Christmas train.

The reviews were about 50/50, and that is all you need to know. Lionel's HO tracks are connected by magnets, and they come apart easily. This causes the train to derail frequently, because the tracks can be loose, even without separating.

A few critics reported that the locomotives locks up after two hours of use. Most folks only run their trains for a few minutes at a time, so it will take a lot of buyers a few months or more to hit two hours of use.

Layout Design Forum / Re: layout turf, when and how to add

It's not a stupid question. I wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea NOT to attach the turf permanently. See how things work out first.
