Postwar Lionel Trains 1945-1969 / Controller
« on: December 22, 2024, 08:07:34 pm »
Hello all,

I have a quirky issue with one of my controllers.  All the 022 switch tracks, there are nine, and controllers date back to the late 1950's and are working fine.  However, I have one controller where both the green and red bulbs are constantly lit.  This does not interfere with the operation of the switch track but it seems odd that I cannot figure out what the problem is.  Do you have a suggestion that would help me remedy this situation?

Thank you,

Thank you Roger, I'll give that a try.

O Scale / Automatic gateman using 153IR controller
« on: December 19, 2020, 03:06:17 pm »
Every Christmas I set up my 8' x 8' Lionel train set (circa 1956) for the grandkids.  Several years ago I bought a 153 IR controller (6-14111) to use with my Automatic Gateman (6-2145)  I have tried every which way to get this to work but just can't.  I'm not an Electrical Engineer but do understand electricity 101.  I sent the automatic gateman to a Lionel repair shop to have some parts replaced and it works fine.  I also had the 153IR tested and it works too.  Instead of the 153IR controller I am using a 153C controller.  The instructions say to use a 145C controller but the 153C works just fine.
My question is:  Reading the instructions for the 153IR controller for the automatic gateman wiring I noticed it shows the automatic gateman model 6-12713 but mine is a model #6-2145.  Could this be the reason I can not get the 153IR to work?  I would think the wiring for the gateman would be the same to the 153IR regardless of the model number.
It seems like such a minor thing but it drives me crazy that I can't get it to work as it should.

Larry and tfcii,

I will unlock the reverse unit and try hitting the whistle button faster and see if that helps.
Also, I joined the Lionel Collector's Club but have not been very active in it yet.  My wife has Alzheimer's so a lot of my time is taken up caring for her.  The model trains are a good diversion.

Thanks,
John H.

I have a ZW transformer like the one my father bought in the late 50's.  I am running a CNW GP38-2 (4600) engine which is about 25 years old.  When I use the whistle button on the transformer the whistle sounds but the engine stops and then changes direction.  Am I right in assuming this is because the transformer is from the post war era and the engine is from the modern era?  Is there a way to sound the whistle without the engine going haywire?  I am rather a novice at this after a 55 year hiatus.  Thanks in advance for your help.
