Lionel Maintenance & Repair / 4508 0-8-0 stripping gears
« on: January 21, 2017, 12:30:32 pm »
Several motors later I'm getting pretty disgusted with this engine.  The museum has 5 of these engines and all of them are stripping their worm or main drive gear.  Lionel has a rubber pad between the motor and motor mount so assuming that is to align the worm to the main drive gear but it's obvious this doesn't work.  I've noticed the motor mount isn't flat so I took a file and filed it flat but this didn't work.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Lionel Maintenance & Repair / Re: Where does this wire go?

Thank you TrainLarry.  That got me thinking outside the box and with a few rearranging of wires, they got to be long enough to connect.

Lionel Maintenance & Repair / Where does this wire go?
« on: February 24, 2014, 08:15:28 pm »
The picture is a chassis of a Sante Fe F3 engine No. 200.  Engine color is blue with yellow on the nose and cabin top.

Oh boy, if I would have only took a picture!  I've got two wires (or more) which I don't know where they go.  I hope the picture goes through so you can see the screw terminal lug near the back motor in the picture.  The lug has two black wires going to it.  One of these wires goes to the motor mount screw to one motor and the other one to the other motor mount screw but where does the screw termnal lug go to?
The other two wire(s) are yellow (just twisted together for no reason), one comes from the truck pickup and the other one goes to the E-unit (reverse relay).  There is a bundle of yellow wires (three to be exact) with a wire nut on them but it doesn't have enough slack in it to reach the one pickup yellow wire.  When I was putting everything back together these two yellow wires and the screw lug with the two black wires were the only wires that were lose.  Can you tell me where these wires go?

Layout Design Forum / SHORTS OUT BETWEEN SWITCHES
« on: February 21, 2013, 11:57:45 am »
Our clubs Lionel layout has an outer loop and an inner loop.  Recently four turnouts were purchased so we could run a train from the outer and inner loop.  The turnout layout has each pair of turnouts hooked together with isolating pins on all three tracks between the turnouts.  There are two transformers (CW40 or 80) one for each loop.  Their power cords are coming off of the same outlet.  The engine switch is in the forward only position.

The problem is when the engine crosses over onto the other turnout, the engine stops and the transformers indicate a short (green light on both transformers are blinking).  I'm assuming that the back truck and front truck on the engine are "common" so when the front truck goes over onto the other turnout each truck is on it's separate power supply or transformer.  Should this make any difference when it's AC?

I have another question.  Should the two transformers be interconnected by a lead going from the common of transformer 1 to transformer 2?
