Lionel Maintenance & Repair / Wabash ft 6-38229

I'll get right to the point.  I bought this engine used at a train show.  The vendor said it worked perfectly.  I wanted it so badly I bought it on the spot.  Well got it home and it wouldn't pull any cars.  The little gear set was missing the outside gear.  Also the sound wasn't very good.  Ordered the gearset and a new speaker.  Put in the gearset and it pulls fine now.  The sound:  can't get the horn or bell to work with any of my transformers and it might blow the horn or bell just randomly going around the layout.  Also the engine does not rev up with the speed of the engine - maybe that's not a problem.  Should I just bite the bullet and buy a new rs module?  $45 plus shipping.

General Lionel Model Train Discussion / Re: Steam or Diesel?
« on: April 27, 2016, 03:15:22 pm »
I think I have about 16 diesels and 6 steamers.  I love them both.  I like Wabash and there's not a lot of selection for steam but have several different Wabash diesels.  I grew up listening to diesels late at night going out of town and then into transition (I think that's the correct term).  I always thought they were shifting gears.  I have steam probably because I like steam power in general.  It's much more "alive" than diesel-electric.

General Lionel Model Train Discussion / Thanks for letting me join.

Hi everyone.  Thanks for letting me join your forum.  At present I have a 12X16 L shaped O gauge layout with 5 mainlines, none intersecting.  The outside is fastrak 72" next is O gauge, next is 027, then 027 that is elevated and intersects those 3 and finally on the inside is an oval/figure 8 of fastrak.  My grandson loves it when I turn them all on and he gets to blow the horns/whistles. He also directs which locomotives/cars go on which track.  We sometimes have disagreements :).  Mostly Wabash since that went thru my hometown (Forrest, Illinois), with also an IC gp20, a T,P & W gp20, and a G,M&O rs-3.  I have this in my shop and even tho I used 2 layers of 2X4 drop in ceiling panels for noise reduction it's still pretty loud.  I also have a 1/2 scale Case steam engine and a couple old john deere tractors - and - a Fairmont S-2 railcar which we take on excursions with NARCOA.  I hope that wasn't too long-winded.  I hope I can get some answers on problems I have with some of my locomotives.  I will ask those in the appropriate forums. Thanks once again.
