How do I remove/replace the rivet so as to tighten up the floppiness of the truck of my Minards flatcar?   I'd like to replace the washer with a thicker one.  Or can I just wail on the rivet with a hammer and a nail punch to make the connection tighter like Tim the Toolman Taylor with a hammer drill.
Thanks,
Mike

When I deliberately short a terminal to ground the red light does not come on. Concerned.

The red light should be off, it's the circuit breaker light. If it does light you have a short circuit on your layout, possible train off the the track or something laying on the track.

Interesting as nothing is joked up to the terminals.

I am refurbishing a used ZW transformer. It had a bad cord, one bad ground terminal and no light bulbs.  I replaced all the bad components and tested the functionality. All throttle and voltage controls work as expected including whistle and direction.  The only issue is that the red bulb (left side) does not light. Swapping the bulbs proves both bulbs are good.  I do not see any bare, shorted or open wires. Does anyone have suggestions as to what might be amiss.
Thanks,
Mike

General Lionel Model Train Discussion / Re: Steam or Diesel?

Steam forever. I love the sound and the memories of my youth. Born '46. I have 5 locomotives., one Diesel, a gang car and a trolley. I just need more layout space.

Given that my Berkshire engine #1225 ( O Gauge Polar Express) slips badly on grades that my Pennsylvania engine #421 can handle relatively easily. Can I simply add additional tractions tires on the two front drive wheels? It already has traction tires on the rear drive wheels.

Thanks for the wiring diagram. I found this http://www.lioneltrainforum.com/lionel-maintenance-repair/common-repairs-for-electric-trains/

I am attempting to service my 1960s Lionel 2615 0-4-0 engine's motor. It has been disassembled, cleaned the wheels, roller pickups, reversing unit, motor brushes, polished the rotor, lubed gears and shaft, and reassembled, leaving off the shell to test operation before full assembly. It had troubles getting going  at all https://vimeo.com/196118230iuntil I gave it a bit of a nudge. Then it worked great in reverse but sputtered and stammered trying to go forwards. I wanted to shoot a video, so I stopped to set up the tripod. Now it does not even try to go in either direction, although I can see the reversing mechanism going up and down easily. See the attached video. I have tried moving the slide switch on top from position to position to no avail. It seems like it may be due to old wiring shorting out somewhere. Any suggestions?

Craig's list, eBay, Classified Ads app, Let Go app, come to mind. Lionel lists it for $280. eBay sold one recently for $227 at auction.

Sounds like  'G Scale'. Many modelers are of the notion that the term 'Large Scale' is best to describe the various scales of models that usually run on 45 mm (1.772 in) track.

General Lionel Model Train Discussion / Re: How to wire layout

I assume both trains are powered with legacy transformer versus Lion Chief and remote control, because with two Lion Chief engines you would not be having this issue.  So, you need an isolation block to break the power from the mainline.  You would need separate power (and maybe even a separate transformer) for the isolated section.

I purchased a Polar express conductor announcement car 6-36875 and found out that the "All Aboard! This is the Polar Express" announcement is only triggered by the Bell button on my CW80 transformer. I want to run the car on another loop with a Lion Chief engine and wall power pack, but There is no way to trigger the announcement.  Any ideas will  be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated the motor, gears, and E-unit, checked the brushes and polished the commutator and reassembled. I am testing the engine with the boiler still removed.  The best performance I have achieved is a halting/hesitating motion that gradual improves.  After along period of rest, the motor performance seems to regress badly and sometimes I am able to get it back to nearly normal operation, but more often it hardly improves at all At this time it almost acts as if it were stuck in idle, but the e-unit is working perfectly. It barely tries to move and then halts. The brushes are ok and the commutator was clean and bright on last viewing.  What can you tell me about such hesitating engine performance as this?
Thanks,
Mike

Replying to my own post: by pressing the motor back toward the cab, the knurled head of the thru bolt became more accessible and my son the engineer was able to turn the screw and finally free the motor.  Now for some seriously overdue maintenance.
