Lionel Maintenance & Repair / Smoke unit identification and repair

I’m very new to this.  I was given a Norfolk western 611 locomotive last year and the smoker doesn’t work. 

What is the replacement for this? 

Are the tubes for smoke from the pistons?

Are there any recommended upgrades?
