I have a 1954 Model 2055 Lionel locomotive with the whistle in the coal tender. Last year the original transformer broke and I had to by a new one. I also bought new track (Fasttrack). The train store guy recommended a Lionel CW-80 transformer. The train runs fine but the whistle does not work. I had the whistle tested at a train store and it worked fine there, so the problem seems to be with the transformer and/or the track. Any ideas on what is causing this or how to fix it?

The problem is most likely with the transformer. Try reversing the leads from the transformer to the track and try the whistle again. You may also want to have the train running with a few cars behind it as you try the whistle.
If this does not work, the transformer may be bad. Return it to the place of purchase with your tender and have them check your tender whistle there with another transformer.
Chances are your old transformer may be able to be repaired. Which transformer do you have, and what is wrong with it?

Do you not have a repair station near you to fix the old transformer? My grandfather does that all the time.. Those old transformers are nice bc they are repairable..Good luck

thanks, I'll try reversing the leads. The transformer started smoking so I disposed of it. :-(
