The Tech 2 1400 supplies DC voltage to the track. Your locomotive may run on AC or DC.

What locomotive do you have, and who is the manufacturer? This info will guide us in determining the proper transformer for you.

I recently purchased a Tech 2 1400 transformer to run a Hudson locomotive on a basic track set up.  The first time I hooked up the transformer and turned on the power, the locomotive flew off of the track.  I unhooked the transformer, reattached the wires and tried two more times.  At no more than 5% power, the transformer was providing so much electricity that the locomotive wouldn't stay on the track.

I'm in Mexico, so it is pretty much just my boys and me in the whole country who have Lionel trains.  That being the case, any guidance on how to get the Tech 2 properly working would be greatly appreciated.
