There are two metal bars that extend (~1") vertically directly over and above (each side of) the commutator of the motor (shaped like a staple). The top of the "staple" is an insulator. The black wire to the light is soldered to one of these bars.

Headlights are usually wired directly to the power pickup rollers.

Any resources available for early Lionel wiring diagrams? I have a NY Central #53 0-4-0 Switcher. I need to know how the front headlight is connected. Mine had no wiring, just the light housing. --TIA
