I would suggest pink or blue extruded foam for your base on a 1x4 frame,
using clear silicone to hold the track down.  Lay a line of silicone down where
your track will go.  Lay your track onto the silicone & let it harden.  You can trim
off any silicone that shows & hide it when you ballast the track.  No worry about
nails, track can be easily removed if you change your layout.

<the exact lionel train I have is in the link at the end this this document> (i dont have any photo of my train, but i have found THE TYPE OF LIONEL train i have)

here is what NO ONE is been able to tell me and I need to know before i 'get to work' (on my train set)

i had my train since I was a child (i think) back in the spring of 2012, i was just in a "JUNK" store, and i found MORE of my train
of course I "HAD" TO have it.... that is not the issue

i tested all my train and 'ALL" of them work despite they are 30 years old, now my problem

I was unsucessful in contacting LIONEL (and hardware stores) to find out "EXACTLY" what type of wood I need, I dont want to use a piece of wood and then the wood "walp" and bend the tracks and the nails I need for the rail tracks, again I am afraid to use the wrong
nail......and then I "SHORT" out the track (if not the train it self)  this is something i always want to keep for as long as I live and will be "SICK" if any thing happens to it

<IF ANY ONE READING THIS KNOW THE BEST PIECE OF WOOD AND BEST NAILS, KINDLY REPLY IF I GET MORE THAN ONE REPLY
THEN I WILL CONSIDER EACH 'REPLY' AS A SUGGESTION...its now 10pm EASTERN  Dec 2, when i post this thank you
