Well, it was completely free in the past 7 years while it was in beta stage of the development.

And it it still completely free now for creating and editing of small layouts (up to 100 tracks/objects).

But if you want to use the new SCARM v. 1.0 for larger layouts, be so good and pay the license fee - $30 is less than single new Lionel turnout.

If you donated or already has a license for MTS PE, you will get a free license key for the new version of SCARM. But you didn't, right? ;)

NOT FREE AT ALL.

After you start to learn how to use it a little, BAM! A message pops up to inform you that you are only allowed to lay 50 pieces of track and NOW YOU HAVE TO PAY $30.00 to continue.

FREE is not $30.00! What layout has <50 pieces of track that you would need this for?

Idunno? Very MIS LEADING.

OK, it was confirmed that the problem comes from the wrong description in the Lionel catalogs and web site. The actual length of these turnouts is 11 3/8".

The updated Lionel-O-Fastrack library for SCARM is ready and published - you can get and install it from the links in the bottom of the same Potential Problems With Lionel O FasTrack O31 switches (http://www.scarm.info/blog/problems-and-solutions/potential-problems-with-lionel-o-fastrack-o31-switches/) blog post. The library will be also included in the next version of the program.

Hello everybody :)

Recently, one user of SCARM layout software reported about possible issue with Lionel FT O31 switches and I posted about it here:

Potential Problems With Lionel O FasTrack O31 switches (http://www.scarm.info/blog/problems-and-solutions/potential-problems-with-lionel-o-fastrack-o31-switches/)

If you can help me to solve that, please, reply here or write a comment in the blog post.

This is an EXCELLENT piece of software for something in such an early stage of development.

Couple of things I'd like to see is the ability to save 3d user created figures into an Object library or as individual object. And make a library or object someone else creates importable. That would allow users to create objects for SCARM that could be shared.

I just created a figure for a lionel 497 coaling station. Others would probably like to have it.

I also have some old .3ds models from the late 90's and early 2000's. An importer / converter for such objects would also be great.

Thank you Quietman :)

I will add your comments in my to-do list.

For now, you can store your user objects as grouped figures in empty project files and share them with others. To use them, just copy and paste the group in the track plan file and then move and rotate it to the desired location. If you want to share your items in the SCARM website, just send these as attachments to (http://www.scarm.info/mail.gif) and I will make a dedicated post for them in the SCARM model railroader blog (http://www.scarm.info/blog/).

About 3DS importer, I cannot promise such right now, but that is possible to appear in some of the future versions of SCARM.

Hi all -

there's also the free XTrackCAD (now Open Source) available for

for free (and possibly others if you know what to do with the source code..).
XtrakCAD is nice. It's been my go to for a number of years.  But it's . . .
1. Not as easy to use as SCARM
2. Has no built in 3D viewing capability. It interfaces with Rail3D through a 3rd party app, but there are bugs that limit it's usefulness (like track elevation)

The new SCARM v. 0.9.34 is ready and published, coming with new and updated track libraries and also with a new extension - the brand new Model Trains Simulator (http://www.scarm.info/index.php?page=extensions&ext=model_trains_simulator_se).

Read more details here:

Model Railroad Layout Designer SCARM 0.9.34 Released (http://www.scarm.info/blog/general/scarm-v-0-9-34-released/)

(http://www.scarm.info/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/SCARM_0_9_34_Update-497x300.jpg) (http://www.scarm.info/blog/general/scarm-v-0-9-34-released/)

The Starter Edition of the simulator is intended for simple 2D and 3D simulations of various operations on the track plans, designed in SCARM. It will show you how the model rolling stock can be operated on a real layout, before buying even a single track.

(http://www.scarm.info/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/SCARM_with_Model_Trains_Simulator-481x300.jpg) (http://www.scarm.info/index.php?page=extensions&ext=model_trains_simulator_se)

In this way, you can check the concept of your plan and to discover potential design issues before start the construction of a real layout. And like SCARM, this edition of the simulator is completely free :)

Please note: the simulator is not directly bundled into SCARM installer. If you want to test it, you must install the latest version of SCARM first and then to use "Extensions" > "Browse for Extensions" menu command in the program in order to download and install the required files.

The simulator opens a whole new world in SCARM universe and can be used not only for checking of particular layout, but also for fun of for playing with the kids. Hope you will like it :)

Here is explained How to Recover a Project File After Crash or Power Failure (http://www.scarm.info/blog/problems-and-solutions/how-to-recover-a-project-file-after-crash-or-power-failure/) and to restore your SCARM track plan to the last autosave state. I hope you do not have to use that feature, but... just in case  ;)

Hello all -

apparently there's yet another free app for OS X: http://www.railmodeller.com/express-edition-en.html

Had only a quick look yet but can't complain about what I've seen so far (it's free after all..)

Happy rails,

It's nice to be able to meet & communicate with the developer of a train related software program.
Your download page is easy to understand and answers most of the questions one might ask.
One track system I do not see that is not on your list is 3 rail Standard Gauge.  There is a resurgence
of interest in original & reproduction Standard Gauge Trains, so including it would be helpful to someone
planning a Standard Gauge Layout, beyond a simple oval of track.
Thanks for sharing your baby with us.
Happy Rails!

Hello Dave,

Yes, I am the author and developer of SCARM. It is still in beta stage of development and I am actively working on it. I am open to all suggestions and ideas which can help to make it better software. If somebody needs help with SCARM, write here and I will try to respond as soon as possible. I will also post a short introduction in the other thread :)

Hello & Welcome to the Forum.
I've checked out the SCARM freeware program and believe it would be a great help for new as well as experienced train enthusiasts.
I did a Norton check on the site and at this time it is free from malware.  I haven't downloaded the SCARM program, so I cannot say that
it is free from malware.
Are you involved with the development of the program or just passing it along?
Thanks for posting & take a moment to  introduce yourself to us in the Introductions thread.

Happy Rails.

Hello all :)

Here I want to present one new freeware program for track planning and layout design:

SCARM - Simple Computer Aided Railway Modeller (http://www.scarm.info/)

It has lightweight and intuitive user interface, 3D viewing capabilities and many other cool functions and features, plus almost all Lionel track systems build-in.

See some sample Lionel layouts here:

Lionel layouts in O scale (http://www.scarm.info/layouts/track_plans.php?scale=O&tracks=Lionel&sort=V)

And one of the layouts from the above link in 2D and 3D:

I hope that SCARM will be easy and useful for design of many new Lionel track plans and layouts - use it for free :)
