Sissy,
I came across this Lionel video of 2 Lion Chief controlled locomotives being operated on the same track.
http://youtu.be/FPRi2xv3tkg
From the information I can gather, the Lion Chief controlled locomotive will work with any transformer attached to the track, but the transformer must be turned up to 18V/full throttle and the locomotive controlled by the matching Lion Chief transmitter. A conventional locomotive attempting to operate on the track at the same time as the Lion Chief controlled locomotive would quickly attain Warp Speed.

Hi Dave!
Thanks for the info, very informative! :)
I suppose I'm like you, transformer is my style too and that's what my son wants and would prefer. So I guess that's the route we'll go.
I just initially just thought the idea of a remote would maybe be easier to work, especially for a 7yr old but he already has a HO transformer train set and he works That just fine.
Interesting and I didn't know you have to have a lion chief locomotive to use That remote.
On the flip side of that, Is a Lion chef locomotive compatible if you wanted to hookup just a basic transformer???
Thanks again. This website is the best resource for lionel trains!!

Sissy,
Hello & Welcome to the Forum!
I'll be honest and tell you straight up that I am biased in favor of the Transformer/Analog control system over the Lion Chief Remote.
All of my O scale electric trains are Transformer controlled.
The Lion Chief Remote System uses a handheld remote controlling an individual locomotive.

(I suggest you read the comments posted with the product announcement.)
With the Lion Chief you will need to run locomotives that are equipped with matching receivers to the remote.
That rules out running Pre War or Post War, MPC or later era Locomotives that you would be able to run on your track with a straight transformer control system. That is IF your son continues with his interest in trains and wants to expand his layout.
The Polar Express Locomotive looks good pulling it's Passenger cars, but will look equally good in the future pulling a string of rail cars, should Santa decide to leave a car or three 'neath the Christmas tree....
Happy Rails!

My 7 yr old has has his heart set on an O gauge polar express for Christmas . He wants transformer style. Pro/cons to having transformer over lion chief remote? Is that remote dependable and of good quality?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
