My name is Gayl. My wife, adult son and I are addicted to antique mall crawling. We are usually in search of breweriana, automobilia, sporting goods, and tableware. I have been meaning to find a nice start to model railroad collecting but until recently never found the right item.I had countless HO sets as a child and a couple as an adult,my dad had an N scale set (i still have) and my son in law has an enormous N scale layout so we are not totally new to model railroading. I hate to pay full retail for stuff so in my case these trips end up being a hunt for pieces that the seller really doesn't appreciate the value of. Yesterday I was able to purchase a post war 1609 set for $26.50. The track, transformer, loco, caboose, hopper car are present and accounted for but the gondola is MIA with a 3330 flat car with what seem to be submarine retaining wires in it's place. The set came with several pieces of extra track some old catalogs and manuals and a cross track piece. No original box but packaged in an 80's era track expansion set box. Not exactly top of the line stuff but I'm thrilled with the set and have another new passion to hunt for. The old girl flies around the dining room table nicely and for the price I feel blessed to have it! Thanks for maintaing this forum and allowing the likes of me to sign up !

Hello & Welcome to the Forum!
We're looking forward to hearing more about your empire.
A review of your various sets could be helpful to others, we love  photo's too!

Many of us play with trains in a variety of scales & gauges both indoor & outdoor,
so you'll be in good company if/when you add garden trains to your roster.

Happy Rails!

Hello Everyone,
My name is Mark.  I'm 61 and just joined the forum.  I just started back up with model railroading about 9 months ago after retiring a second time.  I decided to put up a ceiling/wall train setup and chose the the O Scale due to the size.  It started in my hobby room with the Harry Potter Hogwarts Express.  I then punched a couple of small holes in the wall and extended it out into the living room. Needless to say my wife and I are really looking forward to decorating for Christmas this year.  The grandkids went nuts when I showed them the setup. ;D

I have also extended the collection adding a Pennsylvania General train, Polar Express train, a Santa Fe Super Chief and of course a Lionel Christmas train.  I just joined the Lionel Collector's Club of America. I decided to join the forum to get some insights on the "doing it right" aspect.  Eventually I will be adding a garden railroad setup.

Hey Guys,

My name is Mike and I'm from NEPA.  Use to mess around with HO trains a bit many years ago (20-25), but stopped once everything was lost in a flood.  Now that I have kids I feel like there should be a train under the tree.  Have a nice sized Lionel dealer here who I deal with in my business so I've decided to go with Lionel O scale for that reason.  Decided I'll probably pick up one of the all in one fasttrack sets to start for them.  While looking around for the kids, I also started thinking maybe I'd get into it a bit and add a layout to my "man cave" to keep up year round.  Look forward to chatting with you guys and picking your brains as I have no idea what I'm getting myself into! lol

Thanks
Mike

Hello all,

I am Milen a.k.a. Mixy and I am from Bulgaria. I am software engineer and the author and developer of SCARM train layout software (http://www.scarm.info/) which is free track planning program that includes also almost all Lionel track systems. I am in love with model trains since I was a child. I am modelling in TT scale (1/120) and that's why, when you start SCARM for the first time, it will show the BTTB TT library by default :) I found this forum a week ago and decided to join and introduce my program here. You can read more about it in the SCARM topic here: http://www.lioneltrainforum.com/train-layout/new-free-lionel-track-planning-software (http://www.lioneltrainforum.com/train-layout/new-free-lionel-track-planning-software). I hope that you will like it and that SCARM will be useful for planning of your new Lionel layouts :)

Hi everyone.   My name is Ray and I just registered today. I am a retired cabinet maker and live in N Illinois. Last fall I was able to get hold of an old 1930s vintage Lionel set that had belonged to my father-in law. I had the engine worked over and now it runs nice. Since that time I've picked up a couple of additional cars for the set that I think are correct for that time.

Hi, everyone!  My name is Rob and I'm an electrician from Massachusetts.  I got my Lionel Union Pacific 'Thunder Freight' set for Christmas '82.  I don't have space for a permanent layout in my condo, but enjoy setting up and running my train anyway...  My father, two brothers, and nephew are into Lionel trains as well.

I'm interested in restoring the tender for my Lionel Union Pacific train, and a hopper car.

Anyways...  I'm looking forward to being active on this board!

Hello train junkies!

I'm Eric and hail from God's country up a mile in the sky (Colorado). I have had a O-27 scale train in storage for 25 years and decided to get it out and test the engine recently. This action has opened up some good memories and a renewed intrest that has been lost for too long. My newly restored to service engine is a 2055 from the mid 50's which I just completed a restoration and general maintenance. Still runs great and pulls a 6 car passenger set with ease. I wanted to have this set on display instead of storage so I installed an elevated layout in my home office which I am learning to love and hate. Working out the bugs on a layout that is somewhat difficult to access. No room in the house for a "Train Room" yet however the kids will be out in a few years and I have plans for the extra space, if the better half will allow. ;)  Recently purchased at an auction a Southern Pacific Daylight engine to add to a beginning collection of quality Lionel equipment. Love the new tech in the engines however I remain partial to the post war engines such as my 2055. Just want to show appreciation to the moderator and administrators of this forum, I can tell I will have found a good forum for information, answers and just good train talk from other enthusiasts.

Hello all...
First I have to thank Neil (Young) for his interest in trains and  saving Lionel.
My Name is David, I've been playing with trains, since 1957 when I got my first
clockwork train.  In 1959 I received my first electric, a Sears/Marx 0-27 set.
Over the years I've dabbled with S & HO, currently doing Large Scale and N scale.
I am in the process of acquiring an older Lionel 0-27 set.  (A Blue Comet Freight set?)
I have one of the 0-6-0 Lionel Large Scale locomotive & the Lionel large scale Polar Express.
I'm a veteran, received the "Greetings from the President" letter in 69.
About to retire in a couple months and devote myself to seriously
playing with trains....
 ;D

Thanks for your service!  Great story.  Welcome!

Greetings to all.  My name is Tyler and I am 22 years old.  I started “playing” with Lionel Trains when I was 5 years old.  However, I started “collecting” in my mid-teens.  Lately, due to law school, I have not had much time to allocate to running and collecting Lionel Trains.  I am from rural Zebulon, NC, and I am fortunate to have a Lionel Authorized Value Dealer 10 minutes away from my home.  I look forward to answering questions and receiving answers to my own questions.

Welcome to the Lionel Forum!!  Please post often, hope you'll be patient with us over the next year or so until we build a strong member base.  Please tell your model railroading friends about us!

Hello, Mike here, 39yrs old.  Got my start in model trains around 5yrs old watching grandpa run my fathers old Lionel set from the late 40's.  I got my own set, a Tyco HO set unfortunatly, for Christmas the following year.  I burnt up the motor in the locomotive the day I got it. Needless to say, grandpa talked to dad and for my birthday the following March I got a MPC era Midnight Flyer 027 train set.  When I was 12 I got to take possesion of dad's old set which I still operate to this very day.  I am in the process of building a small pre 1950 postwar Lionel layout in our spare room.  I fix trains of all scales for the local hobby shop and I have repaired trains for 2 different Lionel shops in the past, Harmon's Trains in Arcadia, IN, and Train City in Erie, PA.   Cheers   Mike and Michele T

Greetings from Iowa! I am in my mid 50's and am a Vietnam Era Vet, 101st ABN DIV. I have worked in the pipeine industry for the past 31 + years and hope to retire to my RR in about 4 years.

I have only been into Lionel Trains for the past 3 years and am hooked beyond description. I started my RR with purchasing the all of the FM Trainmasters from the late 70's to mid 80's, I also have some F-3's which include some from the 50's and the 80's. I also have some steam engines, its not hard to get hooked on them. My layout consists of Ross Track and switches and is a work in progress. I really prefer the older Lionel equipment. I look forward to seeing this forum grow!
