• New to this forum and new to collecting Lionel in my advanced years though having received my very first Lionel train set 55 years ago.
  
  I was looking at engine numbers and was wondering if there is a definitive guide to year of manufacture etc.?

• You should pick up the Standard Catalog of Lionel Trains books. They are a great reference for dates and variations etc.

• Thanks for the suggestion ChiefMcFuz! Ordered a post-war book today off of Abebooks today as well as some Greenberg's and McComas/Tuohy pre and postwar.
  
  That should get me going for awhile.
